Rank tracking

Recording where a page ranks among the ten blue links for a given query, over time, the classic SEO monitoring discipline. It answers "where do I place on the results page" and nothing about what an AI-composed answer says, which is a structurally different question once an AI Overview or a chat answer sits above or instead of the ranked list.
In AI Search API
This API does not report a rank position because the surfaces it captures mostly do not have one, an AI answer either names and cites you or it does not. What replaces a rank number here is a simpler question you read straight from the captured answer: is your brand or page named in the answer at all, and if so, how prominently. Teams running classic rank trackers alongside this API typically diff both: whether organic position and AI presence move together or apart is itself the finding. A page can rank first organically and be entirely absent from the AI answer above it, or the reverse, only measuring both surfaces at once reveals which.
